The Abortion Battle in Georgia

Did you know? In 2010, there were 34,585 abortions performed in Georgia, and 77% of those were done in three Atlanta metro counties: Fulton, DeKalb and Cobb. (Source: GRTL DHR 2010) There are SIX counties in Georgia with operating abortion clinics: Fulton, DeKalb, Cobb, Chatham, Richmond and Muskogee.

There are two ways that the number of abortions are counted. The first is the Performed Abortion Rate. This is the number of abortions performed in a particular county. This figure is strictly the number of abortions done in a county, no matter where the person having the abortion is from.

The second is called the Resident Abortion Rate. This is the number of people from a particular county who have an abortion, regardless of where they are performed. For instance, if a person from Polk County travels to metro Atlanta for an abortion, it would be go toward Polk’s resident abortion rate, and also toward the Atlanta county’s performed abortion rate.

The further a county is from an abortion clinic the lower the resident abortion typically is. Thus, the epicenter of performed and resident abortions in Georgia is the metro Atlanta counties of Fulton, DeKalb, Gwinnett, Cobb and Henry.

Despite having a Planned Parenthood and an abortion clinic less than six miles away, Cobb Pregnancy Services has effectively reduced abortion in an area with one of the highest abortion rates in the state.
